West Coast Tanning

West Coast Tanning is all about providing quality customer service, and it is the number one priority for owners Lyndsey Vickrey and James Murday. Located at 1730 Lawndale, in the Westwood Plaza across from Walmart off State St. in Saginaw, West Coast Tanning offers a wide range of tanning memberships, including minute packages.

Even though it has only been open for five months, West Coast Tanning already has around 700 members. Other than mailings to regular customers, there has been no formal advertising. The salon’s success has been due, in large part, to people coming over from Walmart, word of mouth, or general walk-ins. Once customers experience the friendly, welcoming atmosphere, and see the results after each visit, they are extremely happy.

The salon stays competitive by keeping their prices low, and by focusing on treating each customer as though they’re family. They have six tanning beds with facials and ihome radios, and two stand-ups. Because of the higher quality bulbs and equipment, customers get faster, more satisfying results. There’s also a variety of products available for purchase, such as lotions, mp3 players, and exercise balls. There’s even a fountain pop machine.

Lyndsey Vickrey, whose past experience includes 7 years at Potential Energy Athletic Club, decided to open the tanning salon after a discouraging search for a job. She has plans to expand the business in the future. “I love what I do, and we don’t want this to be just a tanning salon,” Vickrey said. “We want to be able to offer more to our customers.” Her idea is to eventually add a fitness center, as well as an area for hair and nails.

Co-owner James Murday, is currently working on installing a bank of lockable cubbies for customers to store lotions during the winter. “I’ve had so many people tell me by the time they get to the salon, their lotion is frozen from sitting in the car all day,” Murday commented. The cubbies are fashioned from recycled post office box doors in an array of fun colors.
