Anne Dietzel of Saginaw Township decided it was time to let someone else take over the fun after 21 years as a water aerobics instructor. On Friday, August 5, Dietzel spent her last day among friends with her usual schedule of classes.

Dietzel taught five classes a day for adults only at Sherwood Elementary School, 3870 Shattuck Road, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday beginning at 7 a.m.

Starting out as a volunteer at the YMCA when she first came to Saginaw, she just moved on from there. She taught both males and females, including couples, at the Sherwood Pool, some of her students in their 90s. There was always plenty of enjoyment and laughter during her classes.

Each year, Dietzel hosted a picnic to celebrate the end of classes, providing the hot dogs while those attending would bring a dish to pass. She felt it was a great way for all her classes to meet up and get to know each other, as well as a fun way to end the summer. This year a special retirement celebration took place along with the annual picnic at Wickes Park on Thursday, August 4. While water aerobics classes will continue at Sherwood Elementary, Dietzel isn’t sure if the summer picnic will as well, since it was something she always planned.

Sherwood Elementary offers yearly and quarterly memberships for aquatic exercise, yearly lap swim memberships, pay per visits, private swim lessons, open swimming, and H2O Bootcamp. The pool is open Monday through Friday.

For more information about the swim programs and schedule at the Sherwood Elementary pool or to register, call Community Education at 797-1847, or stop at their office at Heritage High School (in the Board of Education office).
