New travelogue website launched, looks back at 1962

ROADTRIP-’62 is a travelogue a bit different from other travel sites. It’s a journey through space and time. Not only will it chronicle distance traveled, it will also paint a picture of how life on the highway was experienced as if it were 1962.

Don Milne, President of Milne Enterprises, Inc., is going to try to see what’s left today from 1962 by driving as if it were 1962. He will drive on highways as they were in 1962, try to eat only at restaurants that existed in 1962, try to stay only at motels that existed in 1962, try to buy gas and sundries, play the music, see only the sites across America, and just generally live in America as it was in 1962. It won’t be easy because a lot has changed in almost 50 years.

This virtual road trip will be chronicled at www.roadtrip62.com, with the first trip beginning on route US-23, from Mackinaw City, Michigan to Jacksonville, Florida. Milne will be posting a leg of this imaginary journey every other week, with the first installment on February 7, 2011. In between weeks, Milne will offer more in-depth discussion of some of the differences between 1962 and today. Expect discussions on politics, transportation, pop culture, people, and historical events. Most importantly, he’ll attempt to demonstrate the fun of cross-country driving.

Milne explains the reason he chose 1962 is because he specifically remembers that year. He traveled on his first freeway as a boy with his dad about that time and fell in love with both travel and freeways. He’s been traveling ever since, crisscrossing this country by car many times.

Aside from his own memories, according to Milne 1962 was just cool, and decided he wanted to talk about it, to share the fun with others. He’ll be doing the driving on ROADTRIP-'62, but encourages people if they see anything they like, to get out on the road and enjoy it in person. A virtual road trip may be fun, but there’s nothing like the real thing! As a helpful guide, there will be plenty of links to places Milne will discuss, so anyone can plan their own road trip.

Milne promises to make frequent information updates, adding teasers for other routes and topics, as well as maintain the main weekly postings. Reader comments are encouraged.
