...Romance Author...Kids “Go-Green” at Swan Valley Middle SchoolWhoever said youth was wasted on the young? Apparently, that’s not the case for the youth at Swan Valley Middle School. Every day, after school, the 8th-grade student council has been putting their efforts toward creating an outdoor cafeteria area. Members of the council took it upon themselves to plan the project, create a design, and get quotes for supplies. They wanted to create an a la carte eating area centered on the theme of “Going-Green,” to encourage a healthy lifestyle. While the girls did most of the planning and organizing, the boys have done a great job building the tables, saving money by doing it themselves. Retired GM foreman, Steve Collins, volunteered his time to help build the 6 tables with removable umbrellas for the outdoor area. Weyand Brothers Landscaping also assisted with laying down mulch where the tables will be placed. The student council held several fundraisers throughout the year to pay for the project. In addition to raising money for the outdoor project, the council also raised nearly $2,000 to help needy families. It’s comforting to know that our future leaders are an industrious group of dedicated kids that took it upon themselves to better their environment. In the last months of their time at the middle school, before moving on to the high school, they wanted to leave behind a legacy for students to enjoy for years to come. “They’ve worked very hard on this project, doing everything themselves,” said Lisa Workman, 8th-grade student council supervisor. “They would call the meetings, get everyone together and tell us what they wanted to do.” Workman also teaches Life Skills, Character Education, and drug prevention. “What these kids are doing falls right in with what I try to teach them,” Workman commented. “They’re such a great group of boys and girls.” It is hoped the new outdoor cafeteria area will be finished by the time students return from spring break, after which, there will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
