...Romance Author...Jump Start Your Health FairNearly 1,100 sixth-graders from across Saginaw County attended the 4th annual Jump Start Your Health Fair Wednesday, April 21, at Saginaw Valley State University. Coordinated by the Saginaw Community Foundation (www.saginawfoundation.org), the purpose of the event was to promote fitness and healthy choices for youth, giving them the opportunity to learn about healthy eating and to engage in physical fitness. Activities included martial arts, presented by Michigan Hapkido Community Outreach, 208 S. Michigan Ave. in Saginaw, yoga, aerobics, and tennis. Students were able to experience various physical activities, some of which they’ve never been exposed to. According to Jean Prast, a Jump Start committee member and SVSU Occupational Therapy faculty member, the goal is to expand their knowledge on the importance of physical activity, and the impact it can have on their future. A representative from SVSU’s Occupational Therapy department was there to explain how important it is that patients receive assistance in regaining their skills to perform everyday activities. The American Red Cross of Saginaw County provided information about tornado, fire, heat wave, winter storm, and thunderstorm safety. A Kochville Township fire truck was in the parking lot for kids to explore. Event sponsors included The Dow Chemical Company, Kroger, Subway, Saginaw Community Foundation, Covenant HealthCare and Consumers Energy. The Saginaw Community Foundation is a nonprofit corporation dedicated to improving the quality of life in Saginaw County. Its donors are individuals, families, corporations and organizations who establish charitable funds within SCF. These donations, large and small, help create a permanent endowment for the Saginaw community – a lasting legacy in each donor’s name that supports the work of area nonprofits and provides scholarships for outstanding young people.
