...Romance Author...STA Explore DayStudents at St. Thomas Aquinas (STA) School in Saginaw Township enjoyed a day of hands-on fun and learning during their 9th annual Explore Day, Friday, April 23. The event was planned and organized exclusively by parents and volunteers, who worked all year to put the special day together. A variety of arts and sciences subjects were presented in five, fifty-minute sessions throughout the day. STA parent volunteer, Michele Kuligowski and Creative Memories, helped students design and complete a take-home scrapbooking project. The “Spoon Man” Jim Cruise entertained his student audience with musical sound created by two ordinary household spoons. During “WeatherWhysGuys,” classes engaged in hands-on presentations of severe weather, including various types of storms and storm safety. Andrew Southwell, from Mid-Michigan’s Children’s Museum gave a presentation about our skeletal system called, “Dem Bones.” Michigan Search and Rescue Dogs paid a visit to students, discussing safety in the woods and water, and giving them the opportunity to ask questions and pet the search and rescue dog. Dr. Danielle Duncan, an orthopedic specialist at Saginaw Valley Sport & Spine shared her knowledge of the body’s skeletal system. The kids had fun getting fake casts. In another session, students participated in chemical experiments presented by Dow Chemical employees. Ventriloquist Vikki Gasko brought a collection of cute animals to life, sharing their stories about life in the animal kingdom. Polar bears, turtles, parrots, and more made up the fun and exciting cast. Other sessions included a light show, mini boot camp, cooking class, disability awareness, cartooning, glass blowing, a nature presentation, pig heart dissection, and a rocket launch.
