...Romance Author...St. Stephen School celebrates Almighty April Spirit WeekThis year’s theme: Unity. Under the direction of the student council, students and staff, the week’s activities centered on working together to make a positive difference. Since St. Stephen School, 1300 Malzahn, in Saginaw, merged last month, the event was postponed from what normally would have been called March Madness. Taking place the week of Monday, April 12, through Friday, April 16, it was re-named Almighty April Spirit Week. On Monday, Comfy Day, students were allowed to wear pajama bottoms, sweat pants or jogging pants with a t-shirt. The day’s activity was for teachers to discuss with students what unity and teamwork means to them. For example, teachers and students came up with class names, such as “Miles of Smiles,” for Jennifer Caylen, Student Council Advisor, and Lon Medd’s class. Sheryl Brandow’s 7th-grade class came up with “The Brandow Bunch” (the Brady bunch spin off), Melissa Amey and Bridget Jacqmain’s 8th-grade class came up with “Holy BEAST” (each letter of BEAST standing for a word having to do with their faith), and Michelle Little and Amanda Montini’s class came up with “The Little Montini’s.” Tuesday, Class Color Day, each grade was assigned a color, and students wore shirts with that color, along with jeans and tennis shoes. Students then participated in team-building activities. One such activity involved tying string into a knot only using one hand (with a partner), and others participated in relay races. For Wednesday, Character Day, students wore t-shirts with their favorite fictional character, and participated in cleanup activities, emphasizing the importance of unity and teamwork, and to also help make the school a cleaner, healthier place. Jennifer Caylen’s 7th-grade class washed windows, vacuumed, and washed blackboards and lockers. Thursday, students were asked to come up with examples of how coming together and being united would be beneficial for them in every day life. Jennifer Caylen talked to her kids about teamwork and how you need others to achieve your goals sometimes. She showed them a video clip of a college softball player who was helped around the bases by the opposing team because her knee blew out. Other classes discussed the importance of unity, teams and working together. The week ended with a student vs. staff basketball game on Friday, College Basketball Day. St. Stephen alumni and Michigan State football star Blair White was in attendance as a special guest speaker and referee. Students won the game with a score of 43-42.
