The Saginaw/Shiawassee County, Michigan Area 22, Special Olympics held their 5th annual live and silent auction Saturday, October 23. The auction took place at Four Points Hotel in Saginaw, with dinner, over 100 items available for silent bidding, and over 28 items up for the live bidding. According to Joe Bronz, Area 22 Director of Special Olympics, and his wife, Trish, Auction Chairperson, their chapter is the only one out of 38 areas in Michigan to hold a successful auction. Joe went on to say that all items but one were either from Michigan or made in Michigan. The one item not from Michigan was Chicago’s McDonald’s Thanksgiving Day Parade VIP Tickets, up for live auction. Among the many items offered for bidding were a 2-night stay at the AmericInn outside of Charlevoix, a golf package for two at the Hawk Eye Resort in Bellaire, an American Flag donated by Senator Roger Kahn, M.D., a wine basket, Coleman portable fireplace, including a 6-piece knife set, 4 tickets to Saginaw Spirit hockey game, plus 2 gift certificates for Beef O’Brady’s in Saginaw, and a carbon monoxide detector donated by Consumer’s Energy. Fundraising efforts for the Special Olympics is an ongoing process, which includes their annual auction, the Polar Plunge coming up in February of 2011, and the annual Owosso Golf Outing, which is their largest event. Everyone involved in the Special Olympics would like to express their gratitude for continued support of their organization and, most especially, the athletes. “We’re very thankful that the auction has been a success,” said Trish Bronz. “As volunteers, we don’t get paid, and there are expenses that need to be covered, but the best part of all is to see the smiles on the athletes’ faces.” For anyone interested in sponsoring a Special Olympics athlete, the cost is $120 per athlete, which covers food, equipment and transportation. If the athlete qualifies in the local games, they get to attend the state games. If you would like more information about the Michigan Special Olympics, visit their website at: www.somi.org.
