Shields Elementary School Principal Retires

After serving for 36 years as principal at Shields Elementary School, 6900 Stroebel Rd., Dennis Miner decided it was time to call an end to his long career.

Miner began his teaching career at age 19 by interning in his junior year while attending Central Michigan University. At the time, CMU had a program that allowed students to intern in the classroom. His first assignment was at Port Huron, and then Pinconning.

Before becoming the principal of Shields Elementary, he taught there for four and a half years. He was only 26 when he took the job as principal – younger than much of the staff.

He’d had opportunities through the years to go into the central office, but enjoyed being around the kids too much. “I always believed in showing respect to the kids, and in return received respect from them,” Miner commented.

Leaving was a difficult decision to make, but he knew the time was right. “You have to give 100 percent to the job, and if you have any doubts, it just won’t work,” Miner said.
