...Romance Author...April is Sexual Assault Awareness monthSince April is Sexual Assault Awareness month, Child & Family Services of Saginaw (C&FS), 2806 Davenport in Saginaw, has a variety of events that take place during the month. In its eighth year, these events and fundraisers help create awareness about the lives they are changing and enable them to provide essential services to the community. The “Strikeout Sexual Assault Bowl-A-Thon” took place April 16, at Stardust Lanes, with Walmart as the event sponsor. The Bowl-A-Thon raised nearly $27,000, which includes both a $5,000 in-house donation, and another $5,000 of a pending grant from Walmart. Thrivent For Lutherans raised $1,600. Community members throughout Saginaw County can also show their support by contributing $5.00 and wearing jeans/denim to work. While April 21st was officially marked as Denim Day, Carrie Schultz, Marketing and Development Director of C&FS, was quick to say that any day during the year will do. Some companies participate throughout the entire year by having a Denim Day every Friday. Others might pick a certain month. Proceeds will benefit the Sexual April 19th – 23rd was the Paper Doll Project at the Saginaw County Courthouse. The 352 paper dolls hanging from the ceiling represented the criminal sexual conduct reports for Saginaw County. Many of the dolls were decorated by the victims. “Happy Bear Takes to the Streets” took place on Thursday, April 22, with a message of prevention and awareness to the streets outside the Child & Family Services building. Drivers were encouraged to honk their horns to show their support.
