Russell appointed to Director of Michigan Association of School Boards

Barbara Russell, of Saginaw County, has received an appointment to the MASB (Michigan Association of School Boards) as a Director, representing region 4, replacing Jim Woolfolk. Russell is one of 17 directors who represent different areas of Michigan.

Russell, in her 17th year as a member of the Saginaw Township School Board, also serves as a representative for the SCASB (Saginaw County Association of School Boards).

She is also very active on the Saginaw County Legislative Committee, who meet at least four times a year to discuss legislation that effects schools, and how we can help shape the legislation for better schools.

Russell has been a member of MASB for many years, serving on various committees and focusing on the Governmental Relations Committee, where she is a valuable contributor. She has attended CBA (Certified Board Member) classes to become a Michigan Certified School Board member. Michigan is one of the few states that actually urges school board members to take classes to educate themselves on how to be a good productive board of education member.

She just returned from an intense Federal Relations Conference in Washington D. C. where she met with those representing Michigan. Among those representatives were Debbie Stabenow, Carl Levin, Dale Kildee, and Brian Sutter, from Dave Camp's office. Russell carried a strong message that Michigan students and public schools need to keep communications open between local and federal levels on funding and policy issues.

"This is a difficult time for public schools in relation to funding for program that affect children, as well as in finding ways to better serve our constituents," Russell commented. "I'm honored to have been chosen to serve, and I still have a lot to learn in order to become an effective member in this capacity."
