New RetCam offers area Preemies a brighter future

Saginaw Township Fire Department Assistant Fire Chief
Dawn Banning, Co-Manager of the Covenant RNICU, explains how the new RetCam is able to take 35 images per second, and can be used for comparative views of images taken during different exam dates.

The new digital retina camera (RetCam) is the first of its kind in the region, used to diagnose premature infants with Retinopathy of Prematurity, an eye disease that when undetected or untreated can lead to blindness.

Thursday, December 2, Covenant HealthCare Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (RNICU) hosted a community presentation and preview of the RetCam. The presentation took place in the Anderson Board Room at Covenant HealthCare, 1020 Almira in Saginaw.

The new equipment was made possible thanks to $76,300 in grants and donations. Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) of Outstate Michigan contributed $15,000, a matching $15,000 donation was given on behalf of the Frankenmuth Auto Fest, and a $46,300 grant came from the Covenant HealthCare Foundation.

Founded in 1990, RMHC of Outstate Michigan has awarded grants totaling more that $6 million to approximately 350 Michigan organizations. For more information on RMHC of Outstate
