...Romance Author...'Reality High' prepares middle school students for high school
Each year, students from Swan Valley High School perform in front of middle school students, showing them issues like relationships, sports, suicide and cyber-bullying. Friday, May 13, “Reality High” was presented as a series of skits written and performed by the Saginaw Valley High School Players, to address the challenges and experiences middle school students might face in high school. Topics covered included family relationships, drinking and driving, social perceptions of teenagers, personal appearance, and grades, sending the message to students that they are not alone in their struggles. Following the performance, students were able to ask questions about preparing for high school, the importance of the ACT test, scholarships, and handling bullies. In 2003, Swan Valley High drama students produced the district’s first “Reality High” to tackle substance abuse, poor self-esteem, spreading rumors, peer and family pressure, and eating disorders. It wasn’t until 2008 that the production was resurrected by a Swan Valley High School student for her senior project. Cindy Morley, of Saginaw Family Court, has been overseeing the performances and has been very happy with the reactions of the audiences. According to Morley, the scripts received revamps this year from the actors and from an English class at Swan Valley.
