Powley Street Singers perform

Freeland Elementary’s Powley Street Stingers presented “Melodies Across America,” during their spring concert, Thursday evening, April 29. The performing group is comprised of 120 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th-grade students from Freeland Elementary School, 710 Powley Dr.

The program began with “I Gotta Feeling, performed by the combined choirs, followed by the third and fourth-grade choirs singing, “The Delaware Song,” “Take Me Home Country Roads,” Oklahoma!” and “Rocky Top. The fifth and sixth-grade song list included “California Soul,” Empire State of Mind,” “Mardi Gras Mambo,” “Under the Milky Way,” and “Fifty Nifty United States.” The show ended with a standing ovation after the combined choir performed a stirring rendition of “God Bless the U.S.A.”

The after school program is in its 6th year, with a fall and spring session, and was created by Jeremy Guenther, the Powley Street Singers Director. Guenther also teaches general music with vocal emphasis to grades K-6.

Each fall and spring session is an 8-week program, with two after school practices a week. Originally setup as an intramural program, Guenther felt it would work out better as a voluntary, paid program. That way, kids who really want to be in it can sign up, and there is more time for practice. In an effort to maintain fairness, once students sign up, singers for each group are selected using a lottery format.

“The dedication these kids show is unbelievable,” Guenther said. “The coolest thing about this job is seeing the show come together, and their excitement. I get to see them be stars in front of a standing-room only audience of over 400 people.”
