Black Hawk Helicopter lands at Peace Lutheran

As a special end-of-the-year treat, Gary Campbell, principal of Peace Lutheran School, arranged to have a Black Hawk Army Helicopter land at the school, Thursday, June 3. As the gathered students waited with excitement, Pilots Major John Koltvedt, and CW4 (Chief Warrant Officer) Mike Senyzcko, made a smooth landing in the wide open field next to the school.

Koltvedt has been a pilot since 1998, and Senyzcko for 20 years, and are part of the 3/238 GSAB (General Support Aviation Battalion) in Grand Ledge, MI (near Lansing). This particular Black Hawk is less than a year old, Michigan being the second state to have received brand new helicopters. The Black Hawk unit based in Grand Ledge will soon be deploying to Iraq.

The UH 60 Black Hawk is a utility tactical transport helicopter that replaces the UH-1 “Huey”. Its mission is to provide air assault, general support, aeromedical evacuation, command and control, special operations support to combat, and stability and support operations. It can hold up to 16 soldiers, not including the two pilots.

It was an impressive sight to watch as the Black Hawk flew in, hovering for several seconds before touching down. Once the engine was shut off, and the helicopter secured, students were allowed to climb inside, explore, and even take a turn sitting in the pilot’s seat.

Peace Lutheran School is located at 3161 Lawndale Rd., teaching grades K-8. For more information, call 792-2581, or visit their website at www.peacesaginaw.net.
