For over 30 years Magma Gems has been one of the area’s leading custom design jewelers. Owners Valdis Geidans and Frank Kuszak have over 70 years of expertise in the jewelry business, so you can be assured that each piece they work on will meet the highest standards of excellence. You’re invited to visit their new location on the banks of the Tittabawassee River, at the corner of State St. and Midland Rd., and experience the welcoming atmosphere. Enjoy the view from their showroom window, or perhaps sit on the deck with a cup of coffee and one (or two) of Becky’s home-made cookies while they clean and inspect your precious jewelry at no charge. Formerly located on Hamilton St. in Saginaw, Magma Gems moved to 1975 Midland Rd. in May of this year. They now have a beautiful selection of imported art glass that wasn’t available at the old location. They also carry one-of-a-kind glass beads by well-known glass artist, Don Schnieder, Halia Beads, which fit on all Pandora bracelets, along with custom designed rings, pendants, earrings, and pins. Kuszak explained that they buy the stones first, and then design the jewelry around the stone, something other jewelry stores don’t do. Usually the other jewelry stores will buy the setting first, and then have to buy calibrated stones to fit the manufactured mountings. “Most people are surprised when they find out a custom piece is not as expensive as they thought it would be,” says Kuszak. “The price of a custom piece isn’t any more expensive than a mass-produced piece from a retail store.” Business has been good, despite the lagging economy, and Kuszak believes one reason is the new location. There’s better access with more parking. “A lot of our customers are handicapped or use walkers,” Kuszak said, “so the handicapped parking spaces makes it easier for them.” Magma Gems specializes in gold and silver jewelry repair, custom-designed and fabricated jewelry – their design or yours, custom-designed wedding bands for men and women, anniversary rings, custom-designed bridal sets, pearl and bead re-stringing, watch and battery replacement, watch and clock repair, written appraisals, and unique corporate gifts. Geidans and Kuszak have also agreed to donate a piece of fine jewelry to the Nouvel Catholic Central High School’s annual “Pawsome Auction.” Students will work on designs for the piece to be auctioned, and then submit them to Geidans and Kuszak. The winning design will be auctioned on November 6th at the Horizon Center.
