SVSU sponsors 11th annual international fair

Passport to the World is an international fair aimed at increasing cultural awareness and providing opportunity for language and leadership development. In its 11th year, the event took place Thursday, April 15, and was sponsored by the English Language Program at Saginaw Valley State University. The program offers assistance to international students in learning the English language before beginning classes at the university.

The fair was organized and run by SVSU’s international students who were available to teach their culture through games, music and other activities, to area elementary students. Set up like a mini United Nations, the children were encouraged to visit each display and have their “passports” stamped. There was a passport booth to take photos for the passports, and prizes were given away for any student who received a stamp from every country.

Countries represented were China, Mexico, Venezuela, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, South East Asia, and South Korea. Two countries that are not often represented, and were able to make a showing this year were Poland and Haiti.

Visiting area schools included Carrollton Elementary, Hemmeter Elementary, and Zilwaukee School, among others.

Kids could visit the language table to learn how to say and write their names in different languages, get their picture taken wearing authentic international clothing, hear music from other countries, watch international students sing and dance, listen to international stories, put together large puzzles of many countries from around the world, and watch puppet shows performed by students.

Guests were invited to visit the Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum, to see the sculptures of animals, shapes, people, and more. Tours of the campus were also available given by SVSU students.
