Students celebrated Jerry Madaleno’s last day of school June 9, by singing and releasing balloons in his honor before boarding their buses. Madaleno retired June 30, after 38 years of educational service at Hemlock Public Schools. With the exception of one year teaching in Germany, Madaleno’s entire educational career was spent in Hemlock.

A Vietnam veteran, Madaleno taught 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade, served as MEAP coordinator and Title I coordinator, as well as assistant elementary principal, middle school principal, and elementary principal.

As a mentor for success, Madaleno was dedicated to the students at Hemlock schools, always putting kids first, never giving up on any of them. His lunch hour was spent in the lunch room eating with each grade level daily. He was well respected by both students and staff and will be missed.

Elementary students expressed their thoughts in writing about what they feel Madaleno should do after retirement:

“You should go to Florida.”
“You could help do fire drills—somewhere.”
“You could be a Librarian and sit all day and read.”
“You could give out student of the month at Dow.”
“You could go somewhere to keep people safe.”
“You could be a Tornado Drill Doer.”
