The Food Pantry Receives Donation

The Food Pantry

At a meeting of the board on Wednesday, July 14, The Food Pantry received a donation in the amount of five hundred dollars. Bridgete Looby, Vice President of Development & Community Relations of Catholic Federal Credit Union, presented a check to Father Jack Johnson of SS. Peter & Paul Church, Theresa Korbein, Volunteer Coordinator for The Food Pantry, and Food Pantry volunteer, John Dey.

Located at SS. Peter & Paul Church, 4735 West Michigan Avenue, The Food Pantry has been providing emergency and three-day food provisions for residents of Saginaw County since 1991. And now that they’ve moved into the vacant school behind the church, they will be better able to serve the community, with a comfortable waiting area, offices to interview clients, and more room to store food items.

The church’s goal is to make each visit to The Food Pantry a pleasant, helpful and friendly experience. It’s important to meet their clients’ food needs in a way that makes each of them feel respected and valued as a child of God. Those on the margins of our communities, for whatever reasons, are welcome at The Food Pantry, where personal attention, courtesy, and respect are part of every interaction.

As a Christian community, representing Jesus Christ, it is the mission of the church to come together to share faith, friendship and food where resources are abundant and needs abound. Families, the elderly, the unemployed, singles, the poor, and the underemployed are welcome. All that is required is that those who come to The Food Pantry be residents of Saginaw County, and be able to provide appropriate personal identification for each member of their household. General questions related to income sources are also asked. Clients may come to The Food Pantry once very three months for assistance.

Among the supporters of The Food Pantry are SS. Peter & Paul Church, St. Helen Church, Holy Spirit Church, St. Stephen Church, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, and First United Methodist Church. Money and food donations come from the parishioners of these churches, especially during the Christmas holidays.

Other contributors include Hidden Harvest, Boy Scouts of America, and the Community Action Committee (CAC). The CAC passes on whatever surplus items they might have, like powdered eggs, canned meats, fruits and vegetables, small hams, and shelf milk, to The Food Pantry. Local Dentists have donated toothpaste and toothbrushes.

Catholic Federal Credit Union gives donations at least twice a year, and Wild Fire Credit Union also makes cash and food donations during the Christmas holidays.

But it’s the dedicated volunteers who really make The Food Pantry a success. Larry and Carol Murphy, who are both retired, spend much of their time managing The Food Pantry, doing all the shopping, and making sure the Pantry has what it needs. They often shop at places like Aldi’s, taking advantage of discounted prices. Aldi’s has also donated food items. Theresa Korbein is Volunteer Coordinator, and also keeps many of the records for The Food Pantry. Colleen Fries is a board member representing SS. Peter & Paul Church, and serves as Chairperson on The Food Pantry board, as well. Other volunteers include John Dey, who stocks the food, and Ramone and Diane Torres.

The Food Pantry is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. For more information call 799-5448.
