FM Global Presents Grant to the Tittabawassee Township Fire Department

Tittabawassee Township Fire Department

Don Ortega of the Tittabawassee Township Fire Department, 355 Church St. in Freeland, accepted a grant in the amount of $2,750 from David Whitehurst, Engineering Specialist, FM Global Insurance Company, on Friday, October 15.

Ortega is in charge of fire prevention for the department, and while attending a Juvenile Fire Prevention class in Traverse City, received a tip to go to www.firehouse.com for a list of grant opportunities. Ortega found FM Global, and with the help of his wife, spent 3 to 4 hours writing a request.

About a month ago, Ortega got a letter announcing the department was not only approved for the grant, but that his request was one of the best they’d ever received.

The grant money will be used to purchase such items as smoke detectors, crayons, and hats. Ortega stated that the grant money is enough to buy at least two years worth of fire prevention material.
