Covenant Injury Prevention Program Debuts Distracted Driving Simulator to Local Teens

Covenant Injury Prevention Program

In the middle of March, the Covenant Injury Prevention Program (CIPP) purchased a portable distracted driving simulator with funding from the Covenant HealthCare Auxiliary.  This virtual driver consists of a steering wheel, gas and brake pedals, and a monitor to simulate driving.

The simulator provides many scenarios for the driver to experience what it is like to operate a motor vehicle and the complications distracted driving can have on a person’s ability to drive. This simulator made its first appearance to local medical professionals at the Regional Trauma Symposium in February.

Neil Stokes, Injury Prevention Specialist, worked with students at Nouvel Catholic Central High School in Saginaw Township on Friday, April 8, where the simulator made its first appearance to a school. Stokes shared his own childhood experience of being in a horrific car accident with his mother, brother, and sister. His mother had been distracted for only a moment. On impact, Stokes was thrown through the broken windshield, landing several feet from the vehicle. He sustained a head injury that caused him to lose his sight for a time, but it eventually returned. His mother and siblings, thankfully, also survived the accident.

Students at the assembly were able to see the consequences of distracted driving, such as the loss of attention and control when texting while driving, through the use of the simulator by fellow students. At the end of the simulation, statistics included dollar amounts for traffic tickets, vehicle repair costs, and insurance premium increases to show that not only can distracted driving cause serious personal injury, or even death, but result in costly expenses, as well.

The Covenant Injury Prevention Program, or CIPP, is a service of the Trauma Program.  These programs are offered free of charge and are age specific in regards to the mechanism of injury most common for each age group.  Programs are specifically designed to address the injury prevention tools needed to try to decrease the incidence of injuries occurring.  From seasonal safety tips, fall prevention, and fire safety, this program covers a wide array of topics to prevent injuries from happening through education and awareness.
