Both businesses are owned by Rebecca “Becca” Peckham, designer to the stars. One-time fashion designer for such celebrities as Tanya Tucker, Dolly Parton, Cher, the Mandrell Sisters, and Merle Haggard, Becca began her career by taking her designs to New York City, going from shop to shop, eventually catching the attention of Christian Dior. Though she turned down an offer from Dior, Becca developed her own label, with permanent showrooms in major cities such as New York, Dallas, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, Las Vegas, and Atlanta.

About 20 years ago, Becca, now age 70, returned to the Saginaw area to care for her father, opening a little shop called Daddy’s Rich Bitz. Since then, the store has expanded, carrying the largest selection of costume jewelry in Michigan, some of it hand-made by Becca, herself. She creates crocheted and knitted necklaces in lovely, unique designs.

Clothing is also the shop’s specialty, as well as shoes and accessories. Many of her original clothing designs are available, like her hand knitted and crocheted vests, as well as a selection of other brands. In fact, her creations usually sell before she can even display them in the shop.

The boutique offers personalized service in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. If you would like to update your wardrobe with an edgy style, need help with jewelry choices and matching accessories, Daddy’s Rich Bitz is the place to go.

“The girls here work really hard,” Becca remarked. “They just love to wait on the people who come into the boutique.”

The boutique also specializes in weddings with elegant designs for the mother of the bride. “These aren’t your run-of-the-mill dresses that you usually find off the rack,” Becca states, “and they’re the kind of dresses that can be worn after the wedding.”

Becca also owns Grand Emporium Knitting Studio, located in the area behind Daddy’s Rich Bitz. With 5,000 square feet of space, the Knitting Studio has the largest selection of yarn north of Detroit. “It might even be the largest in Michigan, but I’d have to check on that,” Becca said.

The space is filled with every type of yarn imaginable, including exotic types such as sequined, beaded, dyed fiber, and 100% linen, all in every color of the rainbow. Becca uses fiber artists and vendors from Michigan, as well as all over the world. She discovered there are a lot of people in Michigan who raise sheep and dye yarns, and makes it a priority to purchase from them and other Michigan vendors, which in turn, supports many individuals involved in the industry.

Grand Emporium Knitting Studio also gives knitting lessons free of charge, where other knitting stores charge $30 - $40 per hour for lessons. There are two full-time instructors on site, Marcia Grossmeyer and Dawn Fobear, who are available to give lessons. Their knitted and crocheted items are also on display and for sale. The Knitting Studio has a collection of darling, hand-knitted baby items, and sweaters hand-knitted by Becca, as well.

Daddy’s Rich Bitz Boutique and Grand Emporium Knitting Studio are located at 5880 State Street in Saginaw, and open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. For more information, call Daddy’s Rich Bitz at 793-1234, or the Knitting Studio at 792-1234.
