February is American Heart Month, and Chemical Bank is one of several companies across the country and right here in the Mid-Michigan area who participated in National Wear Red Day on Friday, February 4th. According to Lisa Haines, Assistant Vice President and Retail Sales Manager for Chemical Bank, their involvement in Wear Red Day truly comes down to a passion for educating their employees and customers about heart health. Chemical Bank’s retail staff in the East Region consists of 50 branches located in the Great Lakes Bay Region, Clare, Owosso, and the Thumb, with 300 women and 26 men. There are 23 branches with 169 people in the Great Lakes Bay area (Saginaw, Midland, Bay) alone. They feel it is very important to use this opportunity to reach out to their employees, family, friends, and customers, reminding them that even small adjustments can significantly improve their health. Other companies who participated in National Wear Red Day were Bay Regional Medical Center, Covenant HealthCare, DoubleTree Hotel, Dow Corning, Kettering University, and McLaren Regional Medical Center. American Heart Month is geared toward drawing attention to cardiovascular disease, America’s No. 1 killer, and the strides being taken through research and education to raise awareness and decrease death rates. Since 1963, February has been celebrated as American Heart Month to urge Americans to join the battle against heart disease. Cardiovascular diseases, including stroke, are the number one killer of Michiganders. Cardiovascular disease kills more than 450,000 women each year, which is about one every minute. Sixty-four percent of women who die suddenly of coronary heart disease have no previous symptoms. More women die of cardiovascular diseases than the next five causes of death combined, including all forms of cancer. Eighty percent of cardiac events in women could be prevented if women make the right choices for their hearts, such as getting regular exercise, eating healthier, choosing not to smoke, and managing their cholesterol and blood pressure. Research shows that women who “Go Red” are more likely to make healthy choices. In fact, ninety-six percent of women who have joined the movement have taken at least one action toward a healthier lifestyle. Local organizations will be registering women for the Go Red For Women movement throughout the month. You can register to be a part of the movement in Saginaw at Women’s OB/GYN in the Covenant building on Mackinaw, or MCVI. In downtown Bay City, Trahan Fitness, Work Fitness Studios or All About You Massage. There will be a Go Red For Women Luncheon at the Horizons Center in Saginaw on Thursday, February 17th, where a few hundred women will be gathering to celebrate the Go Red For Women movement. Guests will participate in various discussions about heart health, and raise dollars to fund American Heart Association research. For tickets and to register, visit www.heart.org/saginawmigoredluncheon. Go Red For Women is part of the American Heart Association’s solution to help save women’s lives. GoRedForWomen.org, a premiere source of information and education, connects millions of women of all ages and gives them tangible resources to turn personal choices into lifesaving actions.
