Engel and his best buddy and bass player, Nathan Neuman of Bay City, drove 15 hours straight to NYC. They lived at the studio. They slept there and ate there for two weeks, at times working 14-hour days. “The only thing that got us out of bed at 2 p.m. was the producer coming in and blazing the music one room over,” Engel said. “We recorded 10 awesome original songs I wrote myself. I sang, and also recorded every instrument except the drums.” Besides singing, Engel played all the guitar parts, acoustic and electric, all the piano parts, and all the keyboard auxiliary instruments (strings, choir, horns, etc.), and buddy Nathan Neuman played bass guitar. Originally from Hemlock, Engel played percussion for the Hemlock Middle School band, and had a great time, but didn’t continue with it in high school because he wanted to take other classes. He graduated from Hemlock High School in 2010. He started playing the guitar at about age 12. “I got off the school bus one day and there was a guitar in my house that no one could play,” said Engel. “I picked it up and started going through a small instruction book we had, and found I was naturally gifted.” Singing wasn’t as easy, Engel admits. At 15 he started trying to sing, but had to practice a lot. He’s gotten more comfortable with his singing voice, and writing music naturally followed. “When I start writing a song, most of the time it just flows from me, and then we build the song off of that base.” Engel attended SAE Institute in Nashville, TN for nine months, earning a certificate for audio engineering and production. Currently he’s staying in Hemlock, living and breathing music. He self-released the album, simply titled Chase Engel, and is looking for a little community support. “I know times are tough and money is tight,” he said, “but if you’ve got a few bucks it would mean the world to me.” Engel went on to say, “I need to prove to higher-ups in the industry the CD will sell and that there’s a future in my music.” You can do this by going online and purchasing Engel’s CD. “I really think there is a song on this CD for everyone,” he added. “I’ve been getting super-good feedback on the album so far, so be sure to look me up and tell me what you think of it, and if you like it, help me out and tell anyone you can.” Engel’s music is a mixture of Alternative Rock, Soft Rock, and Pop Rock. With his softly rasping voice and catchy tunes that appeal to a wide range of listeners, his songs have the potential to rival the popular sounds on the radio today. He’s played at places like Bennigans in Midland, the Golden Glow, Whites Bar, and The Magic Bean Cafe. He hopes to play again soon at Bennigan’s, but there’s no official date yet. Look for dates and locations Engel will be playing live locally again.
