April is Child Abuse Prevention Month

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month

On April 1, members of the Saginaw Exchange Club kicked off the month’s activities by planting blue pinwheels on the Saginaw Courthouse lawn. In addition, they tied blue ribbons on the trees along N. Michigan Ave. The ribbons represent and honor the children in our county who have experienced abuse and neglect.

The month of April is devoted to celebrating everything we can do to transform our community into a place that cares about and actively supports families and children. In a recent poll, 89% of Americans reported that child abuse was a “very important” moral issue to them.  But it’s not enough to care about the problem and address its consequences. We have to pay attention to the kinds of efforts that will prevent it from happening in the first place. So this April, learn more about what you and your community can do to support child abuse prevention.  It is a shared responsibility and we’re stronger when we work together.

Prevent Child Abuse America (PCA) has designated April as National Child Abuse Prevention Month. The Child Abuse and Neglect (CAN) Council of Saginaw County is dedicated to raising awareness about the need to stop child abuse and neglect. Each one of us can be a part of protecting our children and strengthening our families. The Saginaw County Board of Commissioners has proclaimed April as Child Abuse Prevention Month in Saginaw County.

The CAN Council is a local 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in Saginaw dedicated to the prevention of child abuse and neglect through education, awareness, intervention and advocacy. It is the only nonprofit organization in Saginaw County devoted to this cause. Founded in 1979, the CAN Council has consistently grown over the past 30 years to meet the needs of the community’s children and families.
