Alan Murphy, 26, started his bike ride to raise money for breast cancer research on July 11th, finishing on August 7th. He rode to Chicago and from there took the historical Route 66 to California’s Santa Monica Pier. Originally from James Township, Murphy attended Swan Valley High School, graduated from Michigan State University, and is now an accountant living in Northville, MI. He wanted to do this ride on his own, staying with friends, in motels and hotels along the way. Murphy said this was the hardest thing he’s ever done and that’s after competing in five marathons. The heat wave this summer was right on Murphy’s route, and even though he was well prepared for his trip, he hadn’t counted on the extreme temperatures.
Murphy wanted to support a local charity and since his mother, Ann, is a breast cancer survivor, he chose to ride for the Covenant Breast Health CARE Fund. He set a goal of $3000, which he reached the last week of his trip. According to Covenant, the latest tally of donations is $3633.60, and as of September 10, 2011, 85 women have received free mammograms thanks to that CARE fund.
Murphy kept an online journal of his adventures which can be viewed at:
