During a special ceremony that took place on January 11, 2011, at the Saginaw Mason’s Lodge #77 (2655 N. Center Rd.), John Carstensen Jr. was presented with the Mason of the Year award, as well as a certificate from the Dept. of the Navy read by one of the Lodge’s Vets.

Carstensen, who also won the Mason of the Year award in 2000, lives with his wife Barbara in Burt, MI. He is a local businessman who used to run Gracie’s restaurant (before it was Gracie’s), and currently owns Maple Gardens.

“John has been an active member of this Lodge since before I was born, and he represents everything we are proud of in Masonry,” said Fernando Garcia, Worshipful Master.

Before becoming an active Lodge member, Carstensen served our country in the Naval Reserves, called to active duty from 1951 to 1953, and graduated from Ohio State University. He also is a member of American Legion Post #22, and the Moose Lodge in Saginaw, as well as being active in bowling leagues and golf outings.

Zac Beach, Senior Deacon, had this to say about Carstensen, “John is an honorable man who leads from the front . . . or wherever he is standing.”

Carstensen was raised to the degree of a Master Mason on June 24, 1980. He served as the Master of the Lodge in 1996 and again in 2003, and his son John III, served as Master last year.
