Kudos to firefighter Don Ortega of the Tittabawassee Township Fire Department, whose hard work and dedication to his department made it possible to win a $10,000 grant from Liberty Mutual. Each year, Liberty Mutual sponsors the ‘Be FireSmart’ Fire Safety Pledge, an online contest for fire departments across the nation.

On Monday, December 6th, Renee Kurowski, Sales Representative for Liberty Mutual in Midland and Branch Manager Lori Alchin, presented Ortega and Chief Phillip Shaver with a check in the amount of $10,000. According to Kurowski, the contest was created last year as a way to help fire departments during the sluggish economy.

The contest rules required the participant to take a quick online fire safety quiz, and then enter the fire department name, which would add one point to a running total for that department. Ortega and his fellow firefighters enlisted the help of friends and family all over the U.S., receiving a phenomenal outpouring of support, ultimately accumulating a total of 3,000 points.

Out of 3,100 participating fire departments, Ortega’s took second place for the small department division, with a department in Massachusetts taking first. Even though Ortega’s department was two weeks late in entering, they were neck-in-neck with the Massachusetts department during the entire contest.
